Cocoa is Ghana

Ghanaians have been have been urged to consume more cocoa to enable them take advantage of its health benefits for a healthier life. Mr Benjamin Larweh, Snr. Public Affairs Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) made this call during a health screening exercise organized for residents of Jamestown in the Odododiodio Constituency.

The Exercise, which was facilitated by the Office of the Ga Mantse in collaboration with Quickpharm, a pharmaceutical company based in Accra, was aimed at providing basic health services to residents of the area.

Addressing the participants on behalf of the Chief Executive, Mr. Larweh said cocoa has numerous health and nutritional benefits and should be consumed regularly. Mr. Larweh further said cocoa contains Polyphenols, Theobromine (plant derived compounds) and Minerals which are important in overall human health and body function. He said these compounds in cocoa help to improve blood circulation, lower blood pressure, prevent heart-related diseases, improve insulin resistance in diabetic patients, improve cognitive function/brain health and reduce bad cholesterol, among others.

According to him, consuming cocoa also minimizes menstrual pain, delays physical signs of ageing and boosts sexual performance both in men and women. He therefore urged them to make cocoa consumption a habit to ensure healthy life.

“I want to emphasise that it is more beneficial to take the unsweetened cocoa since that has higher concentration of flavonoids and can give you maximum health benefits”, he added.

He urged the residents to consume cocoa at least twice a day with an emphasis on the need to see cocoa as food and not medicine.
