REPUBLIC OF GHANA
 4TH OCTOBER, 2019
  PRESS STATEMENT

OPENING OF THE 2019/20 COCOA SEASON   FRIDAY, 4TH OCTOBER 2019

Traditionally, the cocoa trading season in Ghana opens at the beginning of October. We have gathered here to officially announce The Opening of the 2019/2020 Cocoa Season.

As you are aware, the Government announced a significant increase in Producer Price for the season, in Sunyani, on Tuesday, 1st October 2019. The rise in price for the first time in the last three years has come at a time when world prices have reached their lowest in decades. It is evidence of the support the Government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is giving to cocoa farmers in Ghana that in spite of the depressed world prices of cocoa, the farmers will benefit from the increase in producer price in Ghana.

The increase is to provide incentives for farmers to enhance productivity on their farms in the face of rising incidence of diseases such as Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease and others. Government will continue to increase its support to farmers to increase their productivity. These include agronomic practices such as pruning, hand pollination, fertilization, mechanised weeding and specific measures to roll back Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease in the Western North Region in particular.

It is announced for the information of all cocoa farmers, Licenced Buying Companies and Cocoa Hauliers that COCOBOD has opened the 2019/2020 main crop season with effect from today, Friday, 4th October 2019. COCOBOD has made available funds, jute sacks and related logistic for the smooth take off of the 2019/2020 main crop season.

On behalf of the Government and COCOBOD, we wish all cocoa farmers a productive year.

HON. DR. OWUSU AFRIYIE AKOTO
MINISTER FOR FOOD AND AGRICULTURE
